‘Eternal life is to know God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.’ To know Jesus is to know our Father. This is also to know yourself and your fellows. God is known, understood and revealed through Jesus. Jesus is revealed to our hearts and mind by His Spirit, Holy Spirit and our Father. All are in agreement. When we are embracing our fellowship with God, gifted to us entirely by God’s grace, we are living in the reality of the incarnation. This indwelling marinates us in the spirit of wisdom and revelation. Now God becomes known as He is and we are seen in the glory we were created to be and to grow into who we have been redeemed to become.
‘Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent’ John 17.3 NIV. Eternal life is more than pie in the sky by and by. It is infinite life that is ours today because Christ Himself is our life.
What could be better than this? The great issue for human kind is not whether we will obey the law. Not whether our performance is up to standard. Not whether we have done enough. It never was this. The issue is ‘Will we believe in the utter trustworthiness of our Father? Will we believe that He is love in person?’ And along with this, ‘Will we believe that we are twice born sons and daughters of God, guaranteed fellowship in the Holy Family and impregnated with the spirit of sonship?
Living in anything less than this – than in union with God is counterfeit religion. We have a lens on God that is God Himself – Jesus Christ. To know God is to know Jesus, to be in Him and to see life and all that is through His person. So let’s state it as bluntly as it needs to be stated: We cannot know God as He is if we live from the law or from religion. In such distortions we make god a caricature of himself and turn ourselves into crippled and disempowered sons.
‘But what does Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son’ Gal 4.30 NIV.
Did you know that death came through the knowledge of good and evil and the law? Did you know that when Paul speaks of the law of sin and death he is speaking of both. Do you know that God has delivered you from this into the life of His Son and that He Himself is our righteousness and our life?
‘God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God’ 2 Cor 5.21 NIV. But you are not just a collection of righteous acts. More than this you are a son of God.
A friend took offence once when I was speaking at a meeting. I spoke out what Jesus placed in that moment on my heart. I said, ‘There are people here who do not know God.’ This went against the grain because they engaged in serious Bible study. But they lived from the law, which is unfortunate. Unfortunate because in the new testament age we have the opportunity to live directly from Jesus, from our Father and the Spirit. Following Pentecost we have access to the power of an INFINITE LIFE. This is why Christ in you is the hope of glory and law and religion is not. It is a body of death. In the law we can neither know God or know ourselves.
Jesus lived from His Father and we are called to live from Jesus. ‘Christ our life’ means that Jesus is our life, our love, our righteousness and our REAL SELF. To be blunt, one cannot be a real person if one lives from rules and is merely a collection of doings. Here we remain in the fall of Adam, separated from God, attempting to live from the things we think appropriate and avoiding the things that are not. But we are neither alive or fully a person and only a parody of sons. Only when Jesus comes in our flesh are we sons of God in spirit and in truth.
‘I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist’ 2 John 1.7 NIV. Jesus comes in our flesh in order to be our life.
You can choose your identity. You can be a son of God and a real person or servant of the law and a caricature of personhood and your genuine self.
Make sure your Christ is the Christ of God and not the Christ of your own conjecture or mistaken Christian teaching. Jesus lived from His Father. Nothing less. He was one with His Father. So are you. So live in your inheritance and avoid revisionist doctrine and ant-christ tainted assumptions that extend the law beyond the appointed time.
Christ has come in your flesh. This is to say you are indwelt by the Spirit of Christ who manifests His being in your spirit, soul and body. The result? You live in the Spirit of Sonship, alive in grace and righteousness, set free from humbug and religious foolishness and entering further into Christ and the glory of your identity each day of your life. This is the adventure of the daughters and sons of God.
‘Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you’ John 6.53 NIV.
The mystery and adventure of our life today is that Jesus Himself as come in our being to reveal Himself to us and manifest His fullness as the church. We are here to be is life and multiply what He began. The new covenant is a radically new adventure and a decisive break from all that came before the cross. It is Christ come in you and Christ manifest through you in the Spirit of Sonship – never the law come in your flesh or the law continued with Christ’s help or even the law boosted by the charismatic gifts. Eat the son of Man and you will be alive. Consume the law and you will be a dead person walking.
‘Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me’ John 6.57 NIV.
‘I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist’ 2 John 1.7 NIV.
