OUR CENTRAL JOB

Gregory Boyd writes, ‘Our central job is not to solve the world’s problems. Our job is to draw our entire life from Christ and manifest that life to others. Nothing could be simpler—and nothing could be more challenging.’ A critical feature of our Christ life is reading the Bible in Him and forming our doctrine from what He is in His vicarious humanity.

THE LENS

We must read the Bible through the Jesus lens. Not through the lens of the knowledge of good and evil. Even Christ, His gospel and who we are in Him is ruined if we do not move from the old covenant way of seeing to the new covenant way that is THE WAY. Paul’s assertion that ‘Christ is our life’ is foolishness through the eyes of and Adam and Moses but the wisdom of Christ to all who see God, themselves and His gospel though the eyes of Jesus. The Kingdom of God cannot be perceived or understood through old covenant Adamic eyes. To understand the new and living way of the new covenant we must be born again. We must have literally moved from Adam to Christ by embracing His person and declaring to ourselves that He and not ourselves is our life.

This is why the Christ is both the light and the light of human beings who see.

A lot of people don’t get it. They assert that they are not bound in the law, yet they are
hobbled in the dichotomies and compartments of the knowledge of good and evil. What they have is not the new covenant. They have the old covenant with Jesus help. This is like living on the river bank and never entering the river. In such a state they remain in a ‘separation mindset’ despite the fact of the atonement and the oneness that God has achieved for them. God is in you and you are in God. The incarnation – God in you is the truth for this age.

‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20. When we do we will have entered the Kingdom of God.

INTERWOVEN WITH GOD

Our union with God is more than the kind of union we see with a yolk and its white. We are one with God in interwoveness. Our being and His beings is mingled – quite different to the amalgam of externalities that make up institutionalism. In one we are alive with His life and in the other we just hope we are.

Paul expresses new covenant truth in Romans Eight. The new covenant is life in the Spirit of Christ in which we are indwelt and transformed by Jesus becoming us. He does not help us comply with abstractions that are outside ourselves. Jesus is not into doing a more modern ‘kind of law.’ By His Spirit He manifests as us. Jesus imparts His Spirit to our flesh, to our spirits, souls and minds. No, we are not deity. But we are sons who are the effect of His Spirit: Christ come in our flesh.

This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God’ 1 John 4.2 NIV.


HIS NARRATIVE

Leadership today is divided between those who see and those who think they do. If we are to see we have to be humble enough to undo our mindset. Living the Kingdom is agreeing with God’s narrative and repenting of our own. The main symptom of religion is sightlessness along with the illusion that one can see. It’s not so hard to be a blind leader of the blind when darkness has been institutionalised as light and thousands have adopted a Christian version of the knowledge of good and evil and adopted it as though this is what Jesus bequeathed us. Our heritage is not like this. It is Christ our life and more. It is Christ our light. But if we are to see and not just tell ourselves we see we must be prepared to get some new glasses.

Baxter Kruger writes, “
If we are to penetrate the mysteries of our world, then our perception of it must be in constant revision. The New Testament refers to such revision of our perception as repentance– the radical reorientation of our minds. The disciples of Jesus learned by bitter experience that human beings have a way of imposing their own ideas upon God. And they learned that in doing so, we not only create a god of our own imaginations, we also miss the real God and thus the joy of His presence and activity and blessing.”
