There’s something subversive about Christ as your life. When you live in Him and only Him you will progressively liberate yourself entirely from the law, every scrap of legalism and every religious encumbrance that lays a false claim to holiness/wholeness. It can be ‘natural’ to make religion out of encumbrances. But with Christ alone as our life we become infinitely alive!
Legalism pre-disposes us to sin-consciousness. Baxter Kruger observes that, “When you start with legal holiness, you have eyes only for the cross, and you never see that in Jesus Christ, nothing less than the eternal trinitarian life of Father, Son and Spirit is being lived out inside human existence. You never really get the staggering meaning of the incarnation.”
Pauls knows incarnation as ‘Christ in you.’ By living in the law we live ‘the law in you,’ which makes us dead folks walking.
JESUS MAKES US WHOLE
Nothing whole and alive comes from the law. Neither does it come from religion. Christian religion as ‘religion’ is similarly lifeless because it is a cultural form of law. So is a Belief System. The latter is not irrelevant but there is no life in it as such. Although some have waxed bold enough to make a denomination out of the assumption. When Jesus asserts that He is THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE He is saying that HE IS ALL THERE IS, as regards the way home to our Father; He means that in Himself He is veracity and legitimacy. As THE LIFE He means He is the life of God for you and in you.
When Paul talks of the law being abolished, he means not only the Ten Commandments. He means the rules and regulations, the stipulations and assumptions that the religious mind and separated soul concocts as forms of godliness. In Jesus there is real Godliness. Not a form or outward motion. In Jesus we are gifted genuine Godliness. His life as ours!
CHRIST DIED FOR LIFE AND LIVES TO MULTIPLY IT
‘I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!’ Gal 2.21 NIV.
We should have been smart enough to see that true Godliness comes from God - that is from God Himself –from His Spirit with us - and His person manifest as us. Creation finds its order and purpose in union with the Spirit of God. The church is the manifestation of Christ because each person for whom Jesus is life is the manifestation of Him. Today there is no law other than this: Christ the person as your life, the life of the church and the life of the world. This is what Paul described as the law of the spirit of life – not an abstraction but the trinity alive in you.
‘Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death’ Rom 8.2 NIV.
LIVING IN WHAT?
In Christ we are in grace and truth. We are in the trinity who are both love and life. The fact that much of our thinking is not incisive enough to perceive that Godliness is the manifestation of our Father as sons is evidence of the extent to which we still live in the knowledge of good and evil rather than in the Spirit of Sonship. Many live in effective separation from God making religion from the attempt to achieve what we already possess: Union. God is not separated from His way. Jesus is the new and living way wherein the life of God is us. This is called sons. Now we are the sons of God. Were we sons before the cross? Yes. But not in spirit and in truth.
The fall ushered in the age of disrupted sonship and alienation from Father. Jesus’ death signalled the finish of living separated and contriving godliness for ourselves. The cross re-instated the original plan: That human beings would belong in God and flourish in the presence of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
One of the illusions of the knowledge of good and evil is that there is a law, a series of abstract principles and values existing in separation from God. Picture something hanging in space some distance from God – like a law library. Or a web-server filled with ethical principles of should do’s and must nots. This is a phantom of the religious mind; the figment of a mind living in the illusion of separation from God. All there ever has been is the law of the spirit of life – THE LOGOS that is God and His presence in which all that is whole, alive and filled with love moves and has its being. There never was and there never will be an entity called law that is separated from God or from man who is alive in Him and the expression of His being.
‘For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring’ Acts 17.28 NIV.
Another key illusion of the knowledge of good and evil is the notion of secular and sacred. There is no realm that does not exist in God. No place that can have real life outside of God. No time that does not fall under His life-giving sovereignty. No season that is not filled with His presence. No condition that is too sinful for His light and love to penetrate and redeem. There is no ‘my time’ and ‘God’s’ time’ in the realm of sonship and no ‘my things and God’s things.’ Compartmentalisation and dichotomy are a feature of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But not of the Kingdom of God. We are either entirely with God or living in the separated realm of Adam.
‘Through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross’ Col 1.20 NLT.
‘And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ--everything in heaven and on earth’ Eph 1.10 NIV.
Jesus has ended all separation and drawn the entire creation into Himself – in the Spirit. All things are not only under His feet. They all belong to His Kingdom. But we live in the now and the not yet. Our part is to live in Him as co-labourers encouraging people to move into the reality He has already created. This reality is union with God. This is how the new creation advances. This is the creeping advance of spirit and life into things that were dead. It is how dead things become all things made alive in Christ. It is drawing people into that which is already theirs. It is teaching people about what God has already achieved and who they are in Christ. This is the new covenant in spirit and in truth because it is the Kingdom of life that is already yours.
